We offer a selection of practicable routes for cyclists of all levels, which allow you to fully enjoy magnificent landscapes while doing a healthy physical exercise. Of course, you can do them in whole or in part, it’s up to you.
All in the saddle on the most beautiful cycle paths in the world.
Green Avenue London Paris – France and England
This 465 km “avenue” which links the English and French capitals was inaugurated during the London 2012 Olympic Games. It is made up of several autonomous marked sections.
The route uses, on the British side, the tracks of the “National Cycle Network”. On the French side, the Avenue Verte passes by small marked roads and greenways.
Leaving from Paris (Île de la Cité), you cross Île-de-France along the Seine to Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, the boatmen’s haven.
There are two possibilities:
– The first consists of following the course of the Oise in order to reach the south of Picardy via Auvers and the Abbey of Royaumont. A hook by Senlis (old medieval town), then you set off in a western direction via Beauvais and its cathedral.
– The second route covers the Vexin and the Epte valley. The two routes meet at Saint-Germer-de-Fly. You are now in Normandy, where you are discovering the countries of Bray and Dieppe.
Come to Dieppe, brake! There is not yet a bicycle bridge spanning the English Channel. It is a boat that takes you to Sussex. After docking in Newhaven, the seaside town of Brighton is close at hand for a round trip, before embarking on the charming English countryside of Sussex always, then Kent. The trip ends on the banks of the Thames in London.
Route: Paris, Saint-Denis, Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, Auvers-sur-Oise, Asnières-sur-Oise, Senlis, Beauvais (or Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, Villarceaux, Gisors), Saint-Germer-de-Fly , Forges-les-Eaux , Saint-Vaast-d’Equiqueville, Dieppe, Newhaven, Mayfield, Crawley , Redhill, Croydon, London.
Along the Meuse in the Ardennes and in Wallonia – France and Belgium
Enjoy mountainous landscapes without exhausting your calves, this is a pleasure that cannot be denied. The Trans-Ardennes greenway crosses the Meuse valley following the course of this river between Charleville-Mézières and Givet (85 km).
All along a course laid out on an old towpath, you have as decoration small heights covered with forests. Both peaceful and majestic, this environment offers a number of comforting walks – several stations are located along the way.
A slow track (Belgian name of the green way) gives the possibility of continuing its road in Wallonia, always on the banks of the Meuse and with passages borrowing the layout of an old railroad track.
It is a portion of the RAVeL 2, which goes from Hastière to Namur (48 km), then of the RAVeL 1 East which runs to Visé , via Liège (96 km), through hilly landscapes which border the river, which widens thanks to numerous tributaries. After Visé, we find ourselves in Maastricht in the Netherlands where the bicycle is king. From there, if you wish, you follow the Meuse to the North Sea.
Note that it is planned that the Trans-Ardennes will be extended upstream of the river to Sedan and Mouzon. Also note that a walk in the Côtes de Meuse, along a greenway, is also to do in the department of Meuse.
The Danube from Passau to Vienna – Austria & Via Claudia Augusta – Bavaria-Tyrol-Veneto
Danube cycle path
Over 2800 km long, the Danube river crosses all of central Europe. It enters or follows Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldova, Ukraine and Romania, where it empties into the Black Sea.
If facilities are planned for cyclists from its source to the Black Sea, the most famous Danubian route is the one that winds in Austria. It offers optimum comfort over three hundred kilometers between Passau, on the German border, and Vienna.
Taking place on old towpaths on one or other of the banks of the river, your journey begins in the Bavarian Forest. At Schlögen, a meander around a small height gives you the impression of turning around before joining Linz.
It is then again forests in Strudengau. These extend on slopes where villages and castles are hung. Guaranteed romantic atmosphere!
Arrive the cities of Enns and Melk then Wachau, famous wine region which is classified in the world heritage of UNESCO. This marvelous route ends in apotheosis by entering Vienna, a city with a good network of cycle paths.
Course: Passau, Schlögen, Linz, Enns, Melk, Stockerau, Vienna.
Another interesting route (for the more athletic): Via Claudia Augusta, which crosses Tyrol and connects Donauwörth, in Bavaria, to Ostiglia in Veneto: in all, some 700 km crossing different landscapes and climates. The route follows the ancient Roman road.
In Tyrol, it allows you to admire beautiful mountain landscapes (better to be trained or use an electric mountain bike). In some places (Fernpass pass), shuttle service so as not to exhaust the guiboles too much.
Vías verdes – Spain
More than a hundred greenways are to be traveled in Spain. These are old sections of railway lines which, after having been abandoned while retaining their bridges, viaducts and tunnels, have been fitted out for hikers on foot, on horseback or by bicycle – motor vehicles are prohibited.
Totalling two thousand kilometers, these green vías are of all sizes, the shortest spanning 2 km, the longest flirting with the 100 km. There are for all levels, some presenting themselves as sites for walks, for example around Madrid, others offering elevations requiring a little effort.
One of the most popular routes is the winding vía verde del Aceite, which lets you discover Andalusia deep in the province of Jaén, between Jaén (castle and medieval quarters, Renaissance cathedral) and Alcaudete (fortified castle). Surrounded by the small mountains of the Sierras de Jabalcúz, la Grana, la Caracolera and del Ahillos, you ride through fields of olive trees, over a distance of 55 km.
Burren Cycleway – Ireland
Cycling Ireland’s roads is almost a no-brainer. The landscapes of this very green island are ideally savored outdoors. Admittedly, the changing weather, the force of the winds or driving on the left are characteristics which can be perceived as disturbing but after all, do they not contribute to the charm of the walks or hikes that you make in this country?
While waiting to see finalizing the cycle routes of the EuroVelo project , which will allow to go from Belfast to Rosslare by the west and from Galway to Dublin by the center, you have the possibility of offering you already marked out routes In certain regions.
One of these is the Burren Cycleway. It makes a loop of 69 km near Shannon, in the County of Clare (southwest of the island), it offers a remarkable digest of Ireland. It gives you indeed to see a mixture of meadows, moors, cracked stony expanses (we call it lapiaz), castles, and the coast where alternate the high cliffs of Moher, wild coasts, beaches and ports.
As a bonus, don’t miss out on a related loop called Dolmen Cycleway which, as its name suggests, is lined with megalithic sites.
Amsterdam – Netherlands
Amsterdam deserves its reputation as queen of cycling cities and has done so for a long time. Its inhabitants are resolute practitioners of this means of transport, rare are those who do not own a bicycle. There are more bikes (881,000) than inhabitants (802,000) in Amsterdam.
Like them, do not hesitate to take the sprawling network of tracks that has been traced throughout the city – it totals 400 km. You can thus circulate pleasantly from the banks of the canals to the alleys of the old districts passing by the museums of the city… taking care not to trap your wheels in the rails of the tram! You will find many bicycle hires companies as well as city tour organizers.
About hiking, know that all of the Netherlands can be discovered by bike. They have more than 20,000 km of marked cycle paths which allow you to plan routes to your taste between the big cities, but also across the countryside and along the coasts, along the famous fields of windmills or tulips, of course.
If we add to this that this beautiful country is almost entirely flat, we say that we are indeed there in the paradise of cyclists.
The Green Route – Quebec
Helmet down Quebecers! We salute the magnificent effort made in La Belle Province to offer its citizens and visitors a 5,000 km route, which criss-crosses its entire territory at the whim of several marked and developed routes.
In some places, the tracks are designed to be shared safely by all users, elsewhere, and for the most part, tracks are reserved for cyclists only, in particular many sections of disused railways.
Montreal and Quebec are the main departure and crossing points for the different portions of the Route verte, which crosses several natural parks. To the west, it runs to Ontario or Témiscamingue via the Outaouais and the Laurentians. To the east, you follow the Gulf of St. Lawrence to reach the Gaspé or the Manicouagan.
Located off the Gaspé Peninsula, the Magdalen Islands are also equipped with a bike path, part of which you rolled to the middle of the sea, on a thin strip of land!
A circuit also leads to the north, where Lac Saint-Jean (Saguenay) is located. Between Montreal and Quebec, a network of cycle routes invites you to discover the Appalachians in particular.
Good to know accommodation labeled “Welcome cyclists!” are available everywhere. As a certain general might have said, long live Quebec in freewheeling.
Underground Railroad Bicycle Route – United States
Any size of course allows or will allow to roll in the parks of the state of Washington , along the Pacific coast , in the Wild West, in particular at the edge of the Grand Canyon , on the track taken by Lewis and Clark, to across the Midwest, in Texas , in Florida , on the Atlantic coast… The Adventure Cycling Association is coordinating this great project.
One of the most interesting trips to make is to take the Underground Railroad Bicycle Route. Going from Mobile (Alabama) to Owen Sound (Ontario, Canada), it takes you on the path of the southern slaves who fled their servitude to find refuge in the north, from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes.
Intermittently skirting several rivers (Tombigbee, Tennessee, Ohio), this road crosses Alabama, passes in Mississippi, joins Tennessee, Kentucky, flirts with Indiana then enters Ohio.
Arriving at the edge of Lake Erie, you can bypass it by the west, in Michigan, before crossing the Canadian border and skirt Lake Huron to Owen Sound.
From the east, you drive to Pennsylvania and then to New York State, where you enter Canada by the shores of Lake Ontario.
To the pleasure of discovering all or part of the changing landscapes of the campaigns of deep America are added stops in the sites and museums which maintain the memory of these thousands of African-Americans who chose to live free at the risk of their lives.
Course: Mobile, Linden, Fulton, Tishomingo, Waverly, Cave-In-Rock, Owensboro, Cincinnati, Springboro, Delaware, Oberlin, Owen Sound via Detroit or Buffalo.
Llanquihue Lake Circuit – Chile
Riding a bicycle on the roads of Chile often requires very good calves because mountain routes abound. But rest assured, gentle circuits are also waiting for you.
This is the case for the one that runs along the vast Llanquihue Lake (86,000 hectares) in the south of the country, near Puerto Montt. There, the summits are part of the majestic decorations that are offered to you.
The local star is the Osorno volcano (2,661 m), which is decorated with a glacier that can be seen perfectly in the sky and on the surface of the lake. On your way are German-style towns and villas, farms, seaside resorts, as well as splendid forests. Not far away, you have the Petrohué waterfalls.
Are you in great shape? Take the roads that climb above Santiago or on the side of Putre and Parinacota. Another option: go to Argentina through the Elqui valley where the Agua Negra border post is located no less than 4,700 m above sea level.
As crazy, if not more, you have the Carretera Austral, which crosses Chile from north to south by the mountain. To carry out projects of this type, it is more than advisable to register in organized groups and to make a check-up with your doctor.
Tokyo – Japan
It is not a joke: walking in Tokyo by bike is possible! It is even an original way to discover this city that is commonly believed to be completely overrun by car traffic. It is very present, but a network of cycle paths has been developed as in all the big cities of the world.
The local tourist office has designed itineraries that give the opportunity to ride on and off-piste both in ultra-urban environments bristling with tall buildings in the capital of Japan, and in its green spaces, along it’s by the sea or through the streets and alleys of its historic center.
Courses leading you outside Tokyo, for example by following the course of the Tama or Edo rivers, are also on the program.
If you venture alone in such a metropolis worries you a little, know that specialized organizations invite you to follow guides in group. Accommodation and stops for dining are available to anyone who wishes. Note also that large hikes are also to be made through Japan.
The EuroVelo project – Europe
Launched in 1995 by Danish and British associations, the EuroVelo project is led by the European Cyclists Federation (ECF), which has held the handlebars completely since 2007.
Supported financially by the European Commission, its objective is to promote the creation of quality tourist cycle routes across the continent. By 2020, these marked, easy, transnational cycle routes (no more than 10% elevation gain) and with services (shops, accommodation, etc.) will number fourteen and total 70,000 km. The project should continue beyond this date.
The defined routes consist of upgraded cycle lanes or roads with moderate motor traffic, at local, regional or national level. Many of them already exist, others are under development.
Connected, they will allow you to go from north to south and west to east of the continent, without interruption. Each passing year sees more or less long sections of these “highways” dedicated to cyclists.
