Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris
Who has not heard of the famous Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris? The medieval building, immortalized by Victor Hugo in one of his most famous novels, is a mixture of primitive Gothic and Gothic flamboyant styles and impresses with the majestic effect of its architecture and the innumerable works inside, such as the beautiful rosettes of the transept, with a diameter of 13 meters they are among the largest in Europe! The cathedral is located on the Seine island called the Isle of the City in the historic center of Paris, in the 4th arrondissement and not far from the Cité metro station. With 13 million visitors annually, it is the most visited monument in the city, even beforeEiffel tower.
The Notre-Dame cathedral, built between the 12th and 14th centuries, was repeatedly looted and destroyed during the French Revolution before being restored in the 19th century under the direction of the famous architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. On the occasion of its 850th birthday in 2013, nine new bells were installed in the towers and today the cathedral shows its most beautiful side to visitors.
From the outside there is a wonderful example of Gothic art in religious buildings. The west facade, a veritable masterpiece, has three majestic portals decorated with chisels, which, among other things, represent the Last Judgment. On the south side of the cathedral is the beautiful portal Saint-Etienne and on the north flank the portal of the cloister. Inside, visitors come across breathtakingly beautiful windows and choir barriers decorated with bas-reliefs, and the precious church treasure of Notre-Dame, which now houses the relics of the Passion that were formerly kept in the Saint-Chapelle chapel.
In the archaeological crypt of the cathedral square, interested visitors can discover Gallo-Roman, medieval and remains from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is also possible to visit the towers of the cathedral after a steep climb up a spiral staircase. The effort is rewarded: in addition to the impressive gallery of the chimera and the bell in the south tower, you can also enjoy one of the most beautiful views of Paris!
A small but interesting specialty is the zero point of the streets in the forecourt of the Notre-Dame cathedral, approx. 50 m in front of the main entrance. This point is used to calculate the distance from Paris to other cities.
