Sainte-Chapelle
The Sainte-Chapelle, built in the 13th century on behalf of King Ludwig IX, who later became St. Louis, is a true masterpiece of Gothic Rayonnant art and enchants visitors from all over the world. Located in the heart of the city’s island in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, not far from the Cité metro station, it was originally used to house the relics of the passion that are now in the treasury of the Notre-Dame cathedral. This church has true architectural and artistic marvels.
The Sainte-Chapelle consists of two parts, one on top of the other. The tour begins in the lower chapel, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, which has a fresco depicting the Annunciation. The columns decorated with lilies and the towers of Castile are a tribute to the mother of King Louis IX, Blanka of Castile.
The highlight of the tour is a few steps higher in the famous upper chapel. Once you have entered it, you will no longer know where to look first. The 15 magnificent stained-glass windows from the 13th century with 1,113 scenes tell of the history of mankind, from the story of creation to the resurrection of Christ. In addition, the statues of the apostles, the capitals decorated with plant motifs, the tribune of the relics and the western rose window over the apocalypse of St. John also enchant the visitors. And when the sun shines in the windows, these masterpieces light up in even stronger colors.
