The island of the city
In the heart of Paris on the border of the 1st to 4th arrondissements at the Cité metro station is the island of the city (in French Île de la Cité), which is considered the ancient cradle of Paris. Like its neighboring island of Saint-Louis, it is surrounded by the Seine and is one of the most popular destinations for tourists visiting the City of Lights.
You simply cannot resist the architectural and cultural charm of this absolutely magical place. In this part of Paris you will find the Notre-Dame cathedral with its famous towers and the splendid chapel Sainte-Chapelle with its majestic windows, in which the relics of the Passion used to be. Very close to this former palace chapel is the conciergerie on the quay of the clock in the lower part of the island’s royal residence, the palace’s gatehouse, which also served as a prison. In this prison, where Queen Marie Antoinette spent her last hours during the terror of the French Revolution, visitors immerse themselves in one of the darkest epochs in France. Reconstructed prison cells, a memorial chapel to Marie Antoinette and beautiful Gothic halls can be discovered during the tour.
But the charm of the island’s city lies primarily in its peaceful and romantic atmosphere. You can stroll along the banks of the Seine along the banks of the Seine and spend hours browsing through the window displays of booksellers, another symbol of Paris. You will surely find a little treasure between old postcards and books! The Dauphine square, which has already been sung by Jacques Dutronc, lies a little away from the hustle and bustle and with its harmonious facades and its small green area with trees looks very charming. On this river island there is also the more discreet-looking building of two important Paris institutions, namely the Directorate of the Criminal Police and the Municipal Police Headquarters at number 36 on Quai des Orfèvres.
If you like flowers, the best thing to do is to visit the last flower market in Paris. The market, founded in 1808, is located on the Louis-Lépine square and takes place Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. Plants, shrubs and flowers are offered in all possible colors. The equally picturesque and lively bird market takes place on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
