Latin quarter
Along with the Marais, Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Montmartre neighborhoods, the Latin Quarter is certainly one of the most popular destinations for tourists visiting the French metropolis! In this historic district in the 5th and 6th arrondissement on the left bank of the Seinethere is in particular one of the most famous universities in France, namely the Sorbonne with its 17th century chapel where Cardinal Richelieu’s tomb is located. This incredible abundance of artistic and cultural places from universities, colleges, old bookstores and art galleries creates this very special atmosphere of the district. Local residents, students and tourists meet here all year round in a lively atmosphere.
After a relaxing break or a shopping tour in the cafés, restaurants and boutiques of the Boulevard Saint-Michel, you can explore the most beautiful places in the Latin Quarter, of which there are now plenty! On your tour you will find remains from the history of Paris everywhere, from antiquity to the Middle Ages to the modern era.
Start your exploration in the Saint-Séverin district, one of the most picturesque and touristic in this corner of the city on the left bank of the Seine! The medieval character and the typical charm of the streets Galande, Huchette, Harpe and Parcheminerie immediately take you to another era. You will also find many shops and restaurants there, as well as the narrowest street in Paris, Chat-qui-Pêche, in German: the street of the fishing cat. In this part of the district there is also the beautiful Saint-Séverin church with a double choir and beautiful old windows. A little further is the Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre church with its charming little park with a clear view of the Notre-Dame cathedral and a very quiet atmosphere.
As you cross the Latin Quarter, you’ll also see major sites of Parisian heritage, such as the famous Pantheon , the Nation Hall of Fame, the Gallo-Roman Baths and the splendid Cluny Medieval Museum, the ancient arena of Lutetia, the monumental fountain on the famous Saint-Michel square and the pleasant plant garden .
In the evening, the Latin Quarter really revives with art-and-essai cinemas, theaters, concert halls, the illustrious cabaret Paradis Latin and the legendary jazz club Caveau de la Huchette.
Before you continue your journey, make a detour to the picturesque street Mouffetard, where you can stroll past many shops and restaurants and make yourself comfortable on one of the café terraces in the pleasant Contrescarpe square.
